Mercedes 300 SL (W198)
Structural concept:
The 300 SL (W198) is based on a lightweight tubular spaceframe derived from the W194 racing car.
The high side members of this spaceframe required the characteristic gullwing doors, as conventional doors were not structurally possible.
The spaceframe weighed approximately 82 kg and formed the structural backbone of the vehicle.
The inline six-cylinder engine was mounted at a 50° angle to reduce overall height and allow for a lower bonnet line.
The later Roadster version (W198 II) featured a modified frame with lowered side members, enabling conventional doors and improved accessibility, while maintaining the structural rigidity of the original design.
Direct successor to the W194 racing car. At the time, the W198 was affordable for only a few people.
